The Role and Importance of

Volunteerism in Society

In order to achieve these objectives, we need to review the role of volunteers. Perhaps more can be done for volunteerism. Volunteerism needs to be seen from a more holistic, comprehensive and integrated perspective. It is not just about doing volunteer work when one is free and available. It needs to be part of our daily lives with professional training and guidance to support it. There must be a commitment from within to make it work.

Volunteerism also needs to be fun, dynamic, rewarding, exciting and sustainable. It must be able to adapt to changing needs and times. The current Covid-19 Pandemic, and the ensuing Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia has changed things irreversibly in many industries and sectors of the economy. Things have changed not just in Malaysia but globally, and we need to be able to adjust to these changes.

In short, we need to familiarise ourselves with the “New Normal”. The realisation of how interconnected humanity is ought to reinforce our belief that mankind will only survive if there is a collective will and effort to live sustainably and equitably. We must change destructive patterns of greed that have caused untold damage to our home, Planet Earth.

We need to take stock and to see things differently, with responsibility, transparency and accountability. One way to do this is for us to build awareness and participation through volunteerism which is engaging, impactful and honest.

We need to work with like-minded individuals and partners with commitment, dedication and a passion to succeed.
